Aristotle said that, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” Thus we expect that when two entities combine, the new combination is often greater than the individual, just like peanut butter and chocolate. Both are pleasing but together they are even better! At Invista Performance Solutions (IPS) we combine a long tradition of excellence in adult education from the community colleges with an understanding of current trends in professional development to help our clients take their organizations to the next level of performance. We stay current by participating in professional development communities, listening to our clients and continually reading and applying information about the corporate learning and development world.

Recently, news stories began to surface—Microsoft just bought LinkedIn, the popular professional networking site, for a whopping $26.2 billion. This combination of Microsoft’s focus on empowering every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more and LinkedIn’s professional platform could result in customers not only having a chance to connect and establish themselves professionally, but a means with which to achieve this goal. This union of professional software and a professional social network could signify that social media may be used professionally more than recreationally, and it is important to note that while Microsoft and LinkedIn are very different platforms, professionals are their target audience. Following this union, Microsoft has said that LinkedIn profile information will soon be visible in Outlook, Skype, and other Microsoft-owned applications. This just further signifies that one’s professional identity could become one’s most predominant identity on social media. This evolution of social media towards a more professional standpoint is significant, as we and our audience of business professionals need to pay attention to trends. Microsoft and LinkedIn both have separate strengths that provide customers with the skills they need to succeed professionally. By combining their strengths, they have created the potential for an even more helpful tool, and maybe even started a major shift in how we use social media.

This union is similar to how Invista and the community colleges serve our customers. Through combining community college resources (new and existing credit programs, expert faculty, administrative support, and grant funding) with subject matter experts, industry professionals, and current learning & development trends, we provide our customers with training and consulting that will help them grow their organizations and develop their workforce to reach its potential. Utilizing grant funding, expert faculty and our knowledge of current learning & development trends, we were able to create a customized training program for Financial Pacific Leasing that has and continues to exceed their employee development goals.
